Project Components
Process
This "process" component aims initially at enhanced multi-country understanding and agreement on transboundary issues through the development of a Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis (TDA). This will include a mechanism for stakeholders involvement. The component will also focus on the development of sustainable legal and institutitional frameworks for regional cooperation on the CCLME.
The project will establish ad hoc Technical Working Groups where necessary for the orientation and implementation of the assessment and survey work and other activities.
Marine living resources
This "marine living resources" component aims at improved knowledge and capacity for management of marine living resources (including through scientific assessments) as well as strengthened regional policies, instruments and capacity for management to address priority concerns on marine living resources. It also includes the demonstration of management actions to address priority transboundary concerns on marine living resources.
The project will establish ad hoc Technical Working Groups where necessary for the orientation and implementation of the assessment and survey work and other activities.
The CCLME project includes multi-country demonstration actions to test ways of addressing the declining fisheries in the Canary Current large marine ecosystem.
A rigorous selection process has resulted in the choice of five demonstration projects to be implemented by the CCLME project, participating countries and partners. The projects to be implemented under component 2 are:
- Sustainable transboundary management of shared small pelagic stocks in North West Africa consistent with an ecosystem approach
- Reduction of the impact of coastal shrimp trawling through by-catch reduction and management changes
- Transboundary co-management of migratory coastal species of importance to artisanal fisheries (mullets, bluefish and meagre)
Biodiversity & habitat
This "biodiversity, habitat and water quality" component aims at addressing knowledge gaps in relation to critical habitats, biodiversity and water quality issues and at strengthening capacities, policies and planning in this regard. It also includes the demonstration of management actions to address priority transboundary concerns on biodiversity, habitat and water quality.
The project will establish ad hoc Technical Working Groups where necessary for the orientation and implementation of the assessment and survey work and other activities.
