he United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP ) World Conservation Monitoring Centre has developed an online tool for validating mangrove spatial distribution data within the Canary Current Large Marine Ecosystem (CCLME). In developing the tool, CCLME worked with partners Wetlands International and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature on the integration of spatial data relevant to mangroves of the CCLME region.

The Convention for Cooperation in the protection and Development of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the West and Central African Region (Abidjan Convention) will be hosting the 9th Conference Parties (COP9) from 28 March to 1 April 2011 in Accra, Ghana.The Abidjan Convention is an important partner of the CCLME project.

The Project on the "Protection of the Canary Current Large Marine Ecosystem" (CCLME) will organize in close collaboration with the project "Strenghtehning the knowledge base for implementing an ecosystem approach to marine fisheries in developing countries" (EAF-NANSEN), both projects implemented by FAO, a regional ecosystem survey, on board Dr FRIDJTOF NANSEN, in the CCLME area from 20 october to 21 december 2011.

70 participants representing seven countries and over 40 organizations participated at the official launch of the CCLME project during the CCLME inception workshop on 2-3 November 2010.
