Forty participants from the Member countries of the project (Cabo Verde, The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal), FAO, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the Secretariat of the Abidjan Convention, and partner institutions such as the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO), the Regional Partnership for Coastal and Marine conservation in western Africa (PRCM), Wetlands International Africa and the Sub-Regional Fisheries Commission (SRFC) took part in this meeting. It was an opportunity to give an overview of the activities undertaken in 2015, and submit the 2016 work plan.

The opening ceremony was chaired by the Secretary-General of the Minister of Fisheries and the Marine Economy of Senegal. This event was covered by the local press including Zoom infos and Sud Quotidien in their newspapers published on 3 February 2016 and Walf Quotidien on 4 February 2016

Mrs. Celine Navarro assumed her duties as CCLME’s new Thematic Component Leader for Marine Living Resources on 23 March 2015 in the offices of the project in Dakar. She comes after Mr. Aboubacar Sidibe who left the project in July 2014.

Mrs. Navarro previously worked within the Natural Reserve of the Straits of Bonifacio where she participated in the monitoring of artisanal fisheries and conducted a study on the state of conservation of the Brown meagre. She also worked in the Azores, in the Oceanography and Fisheries department of the University of the Azores. She studied there larvae and juveniles of the Blackspot seabream. Mrs. Navarro worked for two years in Guinea Bissau in CIPA (Fisheries Research Center) where she was sent by the Sub Regional Fisheries Commission (SFRC) in the framework of a mission of International Volunteering Solidarity. Her mission was part of the project “Supporting the SRFC to develop co-management initiatives and include Marine Protected Areas in the fisheries management in West Africa” and consisted primarily of assisting the CIPA in the coordination of research activities, preparation and realization of scientific surveys, the management of databases or the drafting of reports or communications. This mission was an opportunity to initiate a process of harmonization of protocols and methodologies across the organization including the preparation of a methodology for the realization of scientific fisheries in CIPA from the protocol to writing the scientific report.

A dozen of participants representing the ministries of environment or research institutes of Cabo Verde, Mauritania, Senegal, Guinea Bissau and the Gambia were thus trained. The Abidjan Convention, theSpanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) and FAO Rome also took part in the training.

The IEO, in charge since 2013 of the design, implementation and development of the geo-referenced data base for the CCLME Project, conducted this training.

The objective of workshop was to support the process of harmonization of cartographic data and to do this, the participants brought geographical information provided by the institutions of their countries. It was a question of familiarizing the experts that participated in the training with the use of geo-referenced database and various data base management tools, as well as producing national maps.
